What Does it Mean to be College and Career Ready?

A student is college and career ready when they have attained the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in credit-bearing postsecondary coursework or a workforce training program in order to achieve their career goals and earn a livable wage.

Roadmap to College and Career Readiness

To make sure you are on the right track to college and career readiness you can follow the K-12 pathway predictors of college success below.

K-6th Grade

  • Maintain good school attendance and miss no more than 10 days.
  • Read on grade level by 3rd grade
  • Score proficient on state tests in Math and English Language Arts by 6th grade

Middle School

  • Maintain strong attendance
  • Perform well on state assessments
  • Pass all classes with a C or better
  • Talk to teachers when you need help
  • Take advanced Math or a foriegn language if offered at your school
  • Create a 4 year plan to help you enroll in the right high school courses and transition to college

High School

  • Maintain strong attendance
  • Aim for A’s and achieve a grade point average of 3.0
  • Set aside time to study and try to do well even when coursework isn’t interesting
  • Talk to your school counselor about your goals and career interests
  • Challenge yourself by taking Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and/or start earning college credits through dual enrollment
a-g requirements

A-G Requirements

Colleges want to know that you have taken the kinds of classes that will prepare you to do well when you arrive at their campus. Which courses they count and which they don’t might vary from one college to another, so the best way to be sure that you are eligible at any college you might want to apply to is to satisfy the UC and CSU’s required courses. These are known as the A-G requirements. If you satisfy them, you will have the courses you need to meet the basic eligibility requirements for almost any university.
